Why a photo and not a CAD file

Every quoting tool in this industry starts from a file: STEP, DXF, a clean PDF. That works fine when the customer is an engineering department. It does not work when the job walks in as a part in a bag and a sketch, which in a shop under ten people is most of them.

The reason is simple. Reading a drawing is the slow part of estimating, and it is slow whether or not a file exists. Starting from a photo skips the step where you wait for someone to send you geometry that may never arrive.

The estimate you get here is a starting point, not gospel — it says so on every result, and it tells you what it could not read. An estimator who does not tell you what it is unsure about is not being confident, it is being useless.

This is one part. A shop is not.
